People of Thanksgiving

By Jean Vanier

We are a eucharistic people which means that we are a people of thanksgiving, people who realize that we are prodigal sons and daughters. We are not called to judge or to condemn but to be instruments of life, to give life and to receive life.

I’ve always been good at giving a little “extra love”, but in small doses. It seems lately, though, that I am being stretched to give larger and larger doses of love and care to others, for longer and sustained periods of time.

I challenge to me is to trust that God will provide me with the resources to do what He wants me to do, when He wants me to do it.

A couple of hours after I wrote my response this morning, I went to the Post Office to get the office mail. While there a gentleman (probably 80 plus) asked me if I could help him open his box. You see, he couldn’t see close up in order to open the box. After I had done so, he thanked me and explained that he was extending his usefulness to his church by not giving up on life until absolutely necessary.

It consistently amazes me how carefully God is watching, and how God gets involved in the details, large and small.
