Wearing Away Rock
Written by admin November 19th, 2008 in on the wayBy Tilden Edwards
Like spring water slowly wearing away rock, meeting with a spiritual director over time can bring to light the ceaseless dripping water of the spirit in our lives. We become more and more aware of that holy water wearing away whatever hardness is left in us. Little by little we find ourselves identifying who we truly are—identifying not with that hard rock, but rather with the fluidity of the Holy Spirit whose child we are. Slowly we give ourselves with Christ to that sparkling stream of God’s Spirit and let it be our way, our truth, our life.

“Little by little we find ourselves identifying who we truly are…”
This entry reminds me of a poem I wrote a few weeks ago about
genuine humility. In the end, that is the subject of the work of both
the Spirit and a Director whose dripping water reveals who and what
we are:
HUMILITY

Once proud,
Now pulverized;
Reduced to minuscule particles,
Resigned to the outcome
Of relentlessly pounding waves.
Self - ‘ssured
Bravado spent;
Essential nature fully revealed,
Exertion to the contrary
An endeavor ebbing with the tide.
Now shamed
In surrender;
Acquiescing to widespread pleasure
Applauding th’ apparent demise
Of aggrandizement washed out to sea.
Still, what
Intrinsic worth!
Modified form notwithstanding,
Metamorphic still at the core,
Its mettle proven in crashing surf.
Clear eyes
Now envisage
Self in unadulterated state;
Static in its truest essence,
And shining through water’s frame, refined.
Steve North,
I love your poem. It is beautiful.
