At the Center of Our Being

At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin and illusion, a point of pure truth, a point or spark which belongs entirely to God, which is never at our disposal.... This little point of nothingness and of absolute poverty is the pure glory of God written in us.... It is like a pure diamond blazing with the invisible light of heaven. It is in everybody, and if we could see it, we would see these billions of points of light coming together in the face and blaze of a sun that would make all the darkness and cruelty of life vanish completely.

    Let's move the hindrances out of the way and let the diamond blaze!

    What a lovely, upliting quote! If only Merton had known to use some less tainted, masculine, limiting word than God!
    Then the words could be read by everyone on the planet, and for a moment, all would be touched by the more-than-merely-human Power, unknowable, unnamable, and amoral that might enlighten and lighten the egocentrism that is killing the planet..

    To what an incredible Spiritual Odyssey Fr. Merton propels us Inward. Would that the "FACE and BLAZE of this SUN" reverse its trajectory Outward and eclipse "all the darkness and cruelty of LIFE".

    IN THE BEGINING WAS THE WORD,
    AND THE WORD WAS WITH GOD;
    AND THE WORD WAS GOD.
    HE WAS IN THE BEGINING WITH GOD.
    ALL THINGS WERE MADE THROUGH HIM,
    AND WITHOUT HIM WAS MADE NOTHING
    THAT HAS BEEN MADE.
    IN HIM WAS LIFE,
    AND THE LIFE WAS THE LIGHT OF MEN.
    AND THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE DARKNESS;
    AND THE DARKNESS GRASPED IT NOT.

    IT WAS THE TRUE LIGHT THAT ENLIGHTENS
    EVERY MAN WHO COMES INTO THE WORLD.
