Set Free

To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.

What a pleasant surprise to see words of my old Calvinism Professor, Lewis Smedes, when he taught at Calvin College in Grand Rapids! He wrote many great books, including "Forgive and Forget: Healing the Hurts We Don't Deserve" which may be the source of today's quote. Thank you for recognizing his wisdom today!

This was awesome for me today. I recently coped with whether to send a card to an in law who got together after 3 mos of a 30 yr relationship and marriage to my brother who passed away. I did send it and did acknowledge the guy by name,. finally realizing that where I can make the choices that count are in things like not going on vacation with them. It is way too soon for me and I also do not click well with either one. The point I guess is I had to FORGIVE this situation while understanding it does not mean I have to love it or even like it and I still can choose what feels right for ME. But the setting free was juts the plain ACCEPTANCE of this reality that she has chosen. Forgiveness is tricky. But I feel better and free as this quote suggests. No one has WON or LOST here.
